Background of the Study

Cardiac palliative care is an essential aspect of healthcare aimed at improving the quality of life for patients suffering from advanced cardiovascular diseases. Unlike curative treatment, palliative care focuses on symptom management, pain relief, and psychosocial support for both patients and their families. In Nigeria, including Kano State, the need for palliative care services has risen, particularly for patients with chronic and terminal cardiac conditions such as heart failure and advanced coronary artery disease. Nurses, as integral members of the healthcare team, are essential in providing palliative care, offering direct support in the form of symptom management, emotional care, and patient education.

Despite the critical role that nurses play in palliative care, there is limited research on their attitudes toward providing such care in cardiac settings. Nurses’ attitudes toward palliative care can significantly influence the quality of care provided and the extent to which patients’ needs are met. In Kano State, where healthcare access may be limited, understanding nurses’ attitudes toward cardiac palliative care is crucial for improving patient outcomes and ensuring comprehensive care for patients with terminal cardiac conditions.

This study seeks to assess the attitudes of nurses in Kano State toward cardiac palliative care, explore factors that influence these attitudes, and identify training needs to enhance their involvement in palliative care provision.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing importance of palliative care in managing patients with advanced cardiac conditions, there is insufficient research on nurses' attitudes toward providing cardiac palliative care in Kano State. Nurses’ attitudes may be shaped by factors such as cultural beliefs, lack of formal training, and personal experiences. Negative or indifferent attitudes toward palliative care can hinder the delivery of quality end-of-life care for patients with cardiovascular diseases, leaving their needs unmet. Therefore, it is crucial to evaluate these attitudes to identify barriers and promote better palliative care practices.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the attitudes of nurses in Kano State toward providing cardiac palliative care.
  2. To identify factors that influence nurses’ attitudes toward cardiac palliative care in Kano State.
  3. To evaluate the need for training and professional development to improve nurses’ attitudes and capabilities in cardiac palliative care.

Research Questions

  1. What are the attitudes of nurses in Kano State toward providing cardiac palliative care?
  2. What factors influence the attitudes of nurses toward cardiac palliative care in Kano State?
  3. How can training and professional development improve nurses’ attitudes toward cardiac palliative care?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses in Kano State have a generally positive attitude toward cardiac palliative care.
  2. Nurses’ attitudes toward cardiac palliative care are influenced by factors such as cultural beliefs, level of training, and experience.
  3. Training programs and professional development positively affect nurses’ attitudes toward providing cardiac palliative care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses in hospitals and healthcare facilities in Kano State involved in the care of cardiac patients. Limitations may include variations in the experiences and exposure of nurses to palliative care, as well as the difficulty of collecting data from rural healthcare facilities due to logistical challenges.

Definitions of Terms
